probably will again But after he sharedhis recent chapbook offering to Dynatox Ministrieswith me, he seems poised to break out of genrerestrictions, to chart a new literary territory.I have to preface this, much as Jason did, byemphasizing that Rotgut County Blues is not Bizarro. It s not even horror Nevertheless, it is definitelysurreal and slightly grotesque Rotgut County Blues is a new art form, or arediscovered one to beprecise Neobeat. For those who are uncertain as to what BeatFiction is, where have you been Most self respectingstudents of the surreal and offbeat have done well tofamiliarize themselves with the stylings of William S.Burroughs, Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg, who arepretty much the three figureheads of the original Beatmovement Beat fiction was known for its fluidity, itsrunning undercurrent of accidental social commentary,a rhythmic ping ponging meant to echo the movementof a jazz composition Kerouac would roam fromcity to city, acquiring jobs and leaving them whenhe had enough money to move on He wrote aboutthe people he met on his travels, always bringingboth their heroic qualities and damaged goods to thesurface in his writing Burroughs was the saint ofjunkydom, a hipster street preacher who managed totie his endless searches for the perfect score back todetective noir and the bleak doomsday clock of ourlives Ginsberg became one of the squares He hadto, in order to beat them in the obscenity trials in thosebright early days Then, the hippies came and routedthe beats out with their tye dyed, Technicolor visionsof American apathy.Jason Wayne Allen had some major shoesto fill when he set out to pen this lively manuscript, which echoed the giants mentioned in the previousparagraph Rotgut County Blues begins, oddlyenough, with a passage from the Book of Leviticus, that infamous Biblical testament which forbids theeating of seafood, eating pork on Sundays and, mostrelevant to the book yours truly is about to review, how to behave around a woman during her menstrualcycle The main character, Jack proceeds to seducehis girlfriend with the idea of fornicating with her inthe restroom of some all night greasy spoon of a diner, while she s on her period Of course, he relents afterhe s actually thought it through That s the tone ofthis entire book It s so dirty, it knows it s dirty Itwants to be dirty It has to be this dirty so you cansee what the lives of Jack and Ruby really are, boredteenagers who never grew up, never had the chanceto Every example of adulthood around them is justas broken and damaged as they are, so they ve had toimprovise, much like everyone else they encounter inthis oddly endearing portrait of suburban driftwood. What s most telling about the character of Jackis that, although he is unable to earn his red wings with Ruby, he does it later with another female, whilehe s still dating Ruby So, this begs the question, ishe only with Ruby due to convenience Well, wenever really find out, because it cuts off abruptly, which leaves me to wonder until the second entry, the forthcoming Amphetamine Dirge.Dynatox Ministries, the publisher of thistrailer punk manifesto, is Jordan Krall s back over to the east side town of Kaneohe and its volcanically produced ocean bay, where I currently reside I rode the bus all day specifically to get some reading time in It s about a 2 2.5 hour ride up to North Shore, and during that time I read Mr Allen s sobering neo beat tale of youth anguish set in the southern United States. What first struck me as interesting is the well honed focus of the story A lot of beat literature tends to stray from their stories with many side anecdotes that do nothing to further the plot RCB never loses sight of its core, however This is a story of young love Jack and Ruby A nod to a certain Oswald killing man, perhaps are the young lovers in question Jack moved to Garr County, Georgia from Atlanta while Ruby s lived there her whole life Despite their differences they both abhor the stale culture of their surroundings, and the two cling to each other for support, drugs or otherwise.Overstimulated but undersexed, Jack s angst is like a trick candle, easy to blow out momentarily but impossible to keep from resparking Get ready for a shitstorm if you run into Jack on a day when he s broke and out of cigarettes He finds solace from his problems hanging out with Ruby, their minds escaping together into beer cans and clouds of marihuana smoke.Mr Allen has painted a stone cold portrait of growing up in the middle of nowhere No sympathy, no leniency, and no excuses Grey lines keep the characters ambivalent There is no clear right or wrong when life is getting by day to day looking for cheap forms of entertainment and waiting for something, anything to happen So it goes in Small Town, USA I bought this book this morning and finished this slender volume in the same day, which is unusual for me I usually read books on and off over a course of a few days But this one clung to my brain with greasy, nimble fingers It concerns the wild white trash adventures of a lusty Romeo and his menstrual Juliet very early in their story, we re launched into their steamy restroom encounter There s also a scene in a pet store that will have you snickering your brains out Some people, it se I bought this book this morning and finished torch, it s nice to see that Jason has picked it up and now has it burning as brightly as an acre wide tire fire I look forward to readingby this author A love story if only they wrote them like this spot on description whar the books four pillars is built with The pacing and cadence is balanced through out the whole ride, and was very comforting for my eyes and my mind And the melancholic and poetic romance between Jack and Ruby is special, both tragic and sweet at the same time, and there s even some comical elements in there which was funny as hell This is published by Dynatox Ministries, a limited edition chapbook that I m very happy to own And it s always fun to discover a new favorite writer Post punk White Trash Neo Beat Fiction Growing Up And Making MistakesFew things areimpactful than seeing a character make a mistake and realizing that they know very well they are making a mistake, but they go ahead and make it anyway, and if it is written well enough, you totally understand why they are making that mistake This book is about growing up and making mistakes and just living It s not pretty at all, but it s a hell of a read, even with all the period blood. A white trash love story interspersed with beautiful passages, I could not help but be impressed by this book There is an honesty and attention to detail in the writing that is superb, with just the right amount of humor I did not want it to end I hope that this is not all we will read of Jack and Ruby. As with a lot of shorter stories I enjoy reading, they end too damn quickly I could have happily kept readingof this.
